BALLYMENA United were given a good workout by Crumlin United in their third pre-season game this month, with an own goal giving the visitors a 1-0 win at Tom McPeake Park on Tuesday night.
There was a number of changes for the Braidmen from Saturday's game with Ballymoney, including starts for Lewis Tennant and Tony Ward, whilst Fiontan O'Boyle also started, with his transfer from Crumlin last week bringing the fixture about.
The first half ended goalless but was a physical battle for a pre-season fixture as both sides gave it a go, with an impressive Crumlin looking the more likely, missing a couple of good chances and forcing United's trialist 'keeper into saves. Ballymena's best chance came via O'Boyle against his old side, but after a tidy turn he fired wide.
Just short of the hour mark the Sky Blues found the game's only goal. A short corner found Andrew McGrory who put a vicious ball in, and it was turned home into his own net by one of the hosts centre backs.
David Taylor, Jordan Gibson and David Parkhouse were amongst substitutes introduced by Jim Ervin, but late on it was Crumlin pushing again, as they headed onto the crossbar and then forced a stunning save out of United's 'keeper.
O'Boyle was replaced late on to a nice reception from his former coaches and players, but a new look Ballymena held on for another pre-season win in a decent encounter.
Ballymena United travel to Dixon Park to face Ballyclare Comrades on Saturday afternoon, kicking off at 2:00pm.
