BALLYMENA United are delighted to announce the signing of Robert McVarnock from Newington FC, securing the signing ahead of a number of other clubs.
The 23-year-old right back had been at the Championship club since 2018, helping them win promotion into the second tier last year with league and cup double success having also lifted the Steel and Sons cup in a man of the match performance against Linfield Swifts. Newington's player of the year also impressed during the Co Antrim Shield against the Sky Blues earlier in the season.
Manager David Jeffrey, "Robert came to our attention well before that game in September, but literally the luck of the draw allowed us to see first hand how he would handle conditions against premiership players. He impressed us before and he impressed us then, with Bryan McLoughlin going to see him play numerous times after that to ensure he was what we were looking for.
We are delighted that he has chosen to challenge himself and make the step up to the top flight, we know that he has the potential but more importantly he has the desire and is absolutely busting to take this opportunity."
McVarnock said he was aware of the step up, but determined to take this opportunity, "first of all I'm absolutely delighted to be joining Ballymena United. I've been here a few times now and the Showgrounds is top class, great playing surface and training facilities. I've played against most of the boys over the last couple of years, here at the Showgrounds a few years back and earlier this season, so I know the ability that I'm stepping into. From those games I'm also very much looking forward to playing in front of the supporters here, I know the numbers that can turn up which is a huge difference from lower down the leagues and drives my determination to get out onto the pitch and play for them.
I had previously been playing as a striker but have worked my way into more of a right wing back as I love to get stuck into the hard work and tackling back, but still contribute to goals even from that position. I've a lot to thank Newington for in terms of my football development, they've given me the opportunity to progress on the pitch and get me to a point of being able to step up."
McVarnock will take squad number 20 for the rest of this season.
