Match Description: A 3,000 strong crowd converged on Fortwilliam Park for the appearance of former European Player of the Year, George Best, in what was his last ever competitive game. Best couldn't prevent a rampant United though as Michael Guy opened the scoring in the 8th minute, floating the ball over the outsretched arms of Jackie Averill; John Sloan rattled home the second two minutes later. The Braidmen increased their lead five minutes into the second half through Jonathan Speak nad then Jeff Wright setup Michael Guy a minute later. Roy Smyth, Brian Crockard and Speak again rounded off a comprehensive seven goal win against the 'B' Division side.

SECOND ROUND - Saturday, 18th February, 1984 - Ballymena Showgrounds BALLYMENA UNITED 2 (Crockard '12; Malone '66) DUNDELA 1 (Barrett '57) Team: Platt, Beattie, Fox, Harrison, Crockard, Burns, Sloan, Guy, Speak, Wright, R. Smyth (sub Malone 33). Match Description: Ballymena United overcame a tricky obstacle against 'B' Division Dundela. They took the lead after 12 minutes when Ronnie Burns' corner kick was headed on by Michael Guy and Brian Crockard applied the finishing touch. Dundela equalised on 57 minutes when a corner from Sammy Whiteside was headed on by Billy Bell, Jim Platt fumbled the effort and Jim Barrett was on hand to rattle the ball over the line. Fortunately United progressed to the quarter-finals when substitute Paul Malone scored the winning goal on 66 minutes.
