BALLYMENA United lost their pre-season game away to Tobermore United with an experimental side on Saturday afternoon.
The opening quarter hour seen chances come and go for both sides, but it was Tobermore who would grab the opening, and only goal of the game, in the 16th minute. The Sky Blue defence were caught napping as Tom Elder got onto a corner and sent the ball past 'keeper Connor Friel.
A series of chances fell United's way during the rest of the half, Ross Lavery rattling the crossbar from 20 yards after 20 minutes, then Andrew McGrory seen his stinging effort palmed away by the Tobermore goalkeeper. Jude Winchester forced another good save 2 minutes later, then with 37 minutes gone he scored but it was ruled out by the referee for an offside offence. Just before half-time Kenny Kane came close to scoring his first goal for United but his shot was smothered.
It was 15 minutes into the second half before Ryan Mayse hit a strong half valley but the home 'keeper was on hand again to palm the ball onto the post. Around the hour mark Adam Lecky fired a close range effort towards goal, the goalkeeper again more than equal to it.
In 70 minutes Dean Lewis stepped up to test the 'keeper but, like many before him, failed to find any joy. As the game headed past 75 minutes Tobermore went close to doubling their lead, a break down the left flank ending with the ball being flashed across the front of Ross Glendinning's goal. With just 5 minutes left Adam Lecky broke through the offside trap but when one on one with the 'keeper, managed to fire the ball high and wide. With the very last play of the match Ryan Mayse fired a shot in but it went over the bar.
Ballymena United travel to Ferney Park to face Ballinamallard United next Saturday afternoon, kick-off time to be confirmed.
