BALLYMENA United managed to hold Malmo FF at bay for 30 minutes, before the Swedish side showed what they're capable of with 7 goals in the next hour.
When you go into a game against a side who are on a long unbeaten stretch, you know you're always going to find it tough, but when it's against a side with great European pedigree, it's not just an uphill battle - it's like climbing Everest.
Both sides had good chances to open the scoring in the first half hour, Guillermo Molins striking the bar with a thundering long range shot for the home side, while chances came and went for United with Adam Lecky unable to reach a Steven McCullough cross after good work from Jude Winchester, and Jude Winchester himself firing a shot towards goal, Malmo 'keeper Johan Dahlin making the save.
Just after the half hour mark had passed, Markus Rosenberg fired two goals past Ross Glendinning in the space of 3 minutes, with Erdal Rakip firing another in just before half-time to make it 3-0 to the hosts.
If the visitors thought Malmo would take their foot off the gas after the break, they were to be proven very wrong. The lead was extended moments into the second half when Franz Brorsson grabbed a goal, before Rosenberg grabbed his hat-trick on 48 minutes with an easy finish inside the box. After striking the bar in the first half, Molins did manage a goal with a volleyed effort on 54 minutes.
Over the next 20 minutes the play was broken up a bit as the home side made 3 substitutions, while Cathair Friel came on to replace Lecky, but the game wasn't over yet as Rakip finished off a classy attack from the Swedes to make it 7-0.
At the full time whistle, the visiting Sky Blues walked around the ground applauding both sets of fans, who reciprocated with their own applause and songs, and it didn't go unmissed by the managers, as David Jeffrey described the appreciation of the home support as phenomenal and Malmo FF manager Uwe Rosler commented on the classy show of respect by United, calling it a wonderful gesture.
We look forward to welcoming Malmo to Ballymena Showgrounds next Thursday evening and are expecting a huge crowd for the 7:45pm kick-off.
