BALLYMENA United defeated Carrick Rangers 4-1 at Belfast Loughshore Arena tonight, goals coming from Jenkins, Friel, McMurray and McCloskey.
The game had barely started and United were ahead, Tony Kane sending in a corner which was nodded down by Caolan Loughran into the path of Allan Jenkins who rammed it home. In the following 15 minutes United had a series of free kicks and another corner was swung out by Kane and Millar rose but headed it just wide. With 21 minutes on the clock United had doubled their lead, another corner from Kane towards the near post allowing Cathair Friel to get his head to it unmarked and fire it home.

In the 31st minute Carrick pulled a goal back after what looked like a terrible decision by Raymond Crangle to penalise Ballymena for a back pass after a sliding tackle on the attacking player. Gareth McKeown struck the ball straight at the wall but Nathan Hanley was on hand to fire past Alan Blayney. United were two goals ahead again in the 39th minute, Johnny McMurray firing a dipping right footed shot over Carrick keeper Simon Steele from almost 30 yards.

With almost 10 minutes of the second half gone, McCloskey had a fantastic chance when he was clear on goal, but he chose to pass to Kane and gave the defender time to get back and prevent a shot at goal. McCloskey did get the next goal, however, as he took the ball into the box and fired low into the bottom corner of the net just after the hour mark.
In the last 10 minutes of the game McMurray was played through from a long ball but shot at the keeper. Friel had a good chance and forced Steele to turn the ball over the bar for a corner. Just before 90 minutes Willie Faulkner sent a shot in and the keeper pushed it away towards Kyle Owens who sent his shot wide.
Ballymena United host Newington YC in the second round of the Northern Ireland Football League Cup on Tuesday 30th, kicking off at 7:45pm.
