BALLYMENA United defeated Loughgall tonight, with goals coming from Cathair Friel and Eoin Kane.
Whilst it was the home side who had most of the play in the opening stages of the game, it was the Braidmen who grabbed the first goal, Tony Kane sending a fantastic cross in the from the left and Cathair Friel heading home at the far post. Moments later United almost doubled their lead, Darren Henderson squaring the ball to Tony Kane who fired over the bar.
On 22 minutes Friel sent a gilt edged chance wide with a close range header, then 4 minutes later Tony Kane chipped the Loughgall keeper from 30 yards but hit the underside of the bar, Henderson unable to convert the rebound.
Loughgall started coming into the game more and were putting the Ballymena defence under pressure, but United resisted and had an effort cleared off the line with 37 minutes gone. The last chance of the first half fell to Kyle Mackie who fired his shot over the bar.
Immediately after the restart Eoin Kane made it 2-0 to the visitors, who remained unchanged after the break. 5 minutes into the half Kyle Mackie had a great chance after being put through by Henderson, but he chipped his effort narrowly wide after beating the keeper.
With just over an hour gone Mackie was replaced by Adam McCracken. His impact was immediate as minutes later he broke free down the left side and played Friel through but his shot on the turn was wide of the mark. Friel had another chance but his one-on-one effort was saved by the keeper.
United then replaced Eoin Kane with Jake McNeill and Darren Henderson with Tyler Wilgaus. 10 minutes later Eoin Kane and Darren Henderson came back on to replace Tony Kane and Cathair Friel.
The last two pre-season friendly games for United are against Limavady United at Limavady Showgrounds and Banbridge Town at Crystal Park, both kicking off at 3pm this Saturday.
