After Oran Kearney's departure at the start of last season, Coleraine had a poor season, finishing 6th, a huge 22 points behing United. They were dumped out of the Tennent's Irish Cup at the semi-final stage with a 2-0 defeat to Crusaders, who ultimately went on to win the competition, and fared even worse in the BetMcLean League Cup where Glentoran defeated them 3-2 on penalties after extra-time at The Oval.

With the unexpected return of Kearney at the start of this season, Coleraine have won 3 league games and drawn 3, made it through to the 3rd round of the BetMcLean League Cup with a 4-0 win over Annagh United, their only defeat so far coming in the North-West Cup on Tuesday evening 2-1 to Moyola Park at Coleraine Showgrounds. They currently sit 2nd in the table on 12 points, 2 ahead of United who have a game in hand.
Ballymena United:
United finished 2nd in the league last season, securing automatic qualification for the Europa League, and made the most of it, getting through a round for the first time in their history before losing to Malmo FF of Sweden. They were knocked out of the Tennent's Irish Cup by Crusaders at the quarter-final stage, lost to Linfield in the final of the BetMcLean League Cup and lost to the same side in the semi-final of the Toals Co Antrim Shield.

So far this season, United have 3 wins, a draw and a defeat in the Danske Bank Premiership and currently occupy 4th place, 6 points behind leaders Crusaders with a game in hand. They also reached the 3rd round of the BetMcLean League Cup with a 3-0 win at home over Newington YC and the 2nd round of the Toals Co Antrim Shield with a 2-1 over Dundela at the Showgrounds on Tuesday evening.
