Harland & Wolff Welders Match Preview

BALLYMENA United host Harland & Wolff Welders in the first round of the Toals Co Antrim Shield on Tuesday night.
The teams met at Tillysburn Park in a friendly in July, with the Welders running out 2-0 winners. The last competitive fixture between the sides was in the sixth round of the Tennent's Irish Cup in February, United winning 3-1 after extra-time thanks to goals from Tony Kane and Kevin Braniff, his second goal on his debut for the Sky Blues.

This is the second season in a row that United and the Welders have faced off in the opening round of the Toals Co Antrim Shield, the Braidmen running out 3-0 winners at the Showgrounds last September thanks to goals from Tony Kane (penalty), Johnny McMurray and Cathair Friel.

Harland & Wolff Welders:
So far this season the Welders have qualified for the second round of the BetMcLean League Cup with a 3-0 home win over Armagh City, although they were knocked out in the next round, losing 3-2 to Portadown. In the Bluefin Sport Championship they opened with a 3-1 defeat away to Limavady United, followed by a 6-1 win over Larne at home, a 3-0 away defeat to Knockbreda, a 1-1 draw at Dergview, a 3-2 home win over Institute and, at the weekend, a 0-0 draw at home to Newry City.

They currently sit in 8th spot in their league table with 8 points.
Ballymena United:
United got their first win of the season in the second round of the BetMclean League Cup, beating Knockbreda 3-0 at the Showgrounds with goals from Cathair Friel, Joe McKinney and Willie Faulkner.

In the Danske Bank Premiership, United have lost to Crusaders, Glenavon, Linfield and Glentoran - who currently occupy 2nd to 5th place in the table. A draw against Carrick Rangers and wins over Cliftonville and Warrenpoint Town is keeping the Sky Blues within 2 points of Dungannon Swifts who sit in 6th place.
